letuno® Underlying Technologies The last few years have witnessed the emergence of a number of technologies that help to identify the location of a device with very high accuracy. Two types of devices are needed and they communicate with each other. One set of devices is usually fixed in certain predefined locations and the other set of devices is usually moving around freely. The communications between these two types of devices help to identify the exact location of the freely moving device in relation to the fixed devices. 8 The moving devices are usually our smart phones. When they are enabled to communicate with the fixed location-aware devices, our exact locations could easily be determined and Enhanced Location Based Services could be offered to the smart phone users instantaneously. Two main technologies are now available commercially and they are quite reliable. These are the Visible Light Communications (VLC) and the Beacons. The VLC devices use communications through the visible light frequency range and they exchange data through a known data transmission technique called Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM). The Beacons are based on the Bluetooth technology. Once the location of a smart phone user is identified, the relevant content will be pushed to the smart phone giving the right informative, promotional or transactional data to the user at the right place and the right time.
